About Hillside Organic Garden
Hillside Organic Garden Kabete was founded in Fortsmith in 2017 by Alice Mwangi in her family’s ¼ acre land. The garden is situated in a residential estate in Nairobi’s Metropolitan area of Upper Kabete, in Kiambu. This location is a tropical mountainous climate with two rain seasons, one in March – June and another in October to December. Temperatures range from 16 -25 degrees Celcius through-out the year with colder season being between June and August. The nights are frosty especially in the cold season.
The land has a sloppy topography, with red loamy soil that is deep and well drained (Nititsols). These soils are highly leached, not fertile and cannot support growth of most crops without fertilizer. The soils are slightly acidic and ideal for coffee and tea bushes. We have however, developed ways to overcoming these limitations to production, by use of techniques such as fermentation to develop well formulated compost fertilizer among other natural methods of soil fertility and crop nutrition management.
